Our Son The Mover: More Tips On Moving With Kids
We’ve officially moved! As the two-month long process comes to an end, the kids are settling down and now the chore of unpacking seems merely like child’s play. Well, the actual process of moving our stuff apparently was child’s play. Our four year-old was self-appointedly in-charge as he assured us that everything would be handled in an orderly and efficient manner. Umm, okay.
It wasn’t too long after the movers arrived that he began barking orders, giving direction and inspecting (and critiquing) their progress. Luckily we had hired two laid back younger guys who seemed to roll with it. Of course our one year-old tried to follow behind, but keeping up with his older supervisor was a challenge.
After a while, they decided to actually help load the truck. Gee, and we were worried that they would get into trouble. Our little mover made sure that every last toy made it on the truck. When he came to the realization that not all of our stuff would fit, he really began to think of ways to maximize space. No, we can’t strap your brother to the roof!
After all, this was his third move and it was old hat. That night we thought we’d stay at a hotel and let them eat junk food – their reward for “good” behavior. Of course, we were way behind schedule and nothing went according to plan, but the kids were used to it by now. The next day, after a quick cleaning and stuffing the car with everything possible, we set off for our new home.
Unloading on the other end would go pretty much the same with our little movers joining our big movers to get the job done. This really was a good way to transition the kids as it helped them to feel in charge of their stuff.
So, in addition to our previous tips, we’ve learned a bit more on this part of the journey.
- Hire movers who are kid-friendly and can tolerate and even work with kids during the actual moving process.
- Let the kids participate in the actual moving process. Although this may seem a bit chaotic, it provides for a much easier transition as they retain a sense of control.
- Build lots of extra time into the schedule.
- Plan a special treat or activity to keep the kids entertained and incentivized during the actual moving process.
- Get unpacked and settled as quickly as possible. Kids will multiply the chaos in an already chaotic situation.
We’ve survived yet another move. Please share your moving experiences with us too!
