Peter The Cruise Ship – Kids Book Review

Peter The Cruise Ship is a children’s book written by Captain Hans Mateboer, a real life cruise ship Captain!  We were first introduced to Peter while sailing on the Celebrity Mercury earlier this year.  Our four year old loves books and when he saw this in one of the onboard shops, he had to have it.

How could we possibly say no – and lucky for us, it was the last one.

“Today new passengers are coming on board.  They arrive by plane, car, or bus.  They bring lots of luggage and are very excited about cruising with Peter.  Peter is really happy to see them and welcomes them with a blast of his horn.”

- Peter The Cruise Ship by Hans Mateboer

The first page has a giant ships wheel with space to record a “To” and “From” so you can give this as a special gift to your first time cruiser.  The story unfolds over the next 32 pages just as your cruise unfolds with the author providing just enough detail about how things work to stimulate any young child’s curiosity.  We found it to be extremely relatable for young children between the ages of 2 and 8.  Recently, my son brought it to school for library reading time and it was an instant hit!

As Peter sails his way across the world, he meets many friends.  He encounters a wild storm that leads to a daring rescue.  When Peter finally makes it to his first port, he has a funny encounter with a whale before heading back home to do it all over again.

Peter The Cruise Ship is a 32-page full color hardcover book with illustrations that really come to life.  It’s pretty sturdy too.  Despite its frequent use, it doesn’t have any tears or other issues that you sometimes find with books that are more cheaply constructed.  Bottom line, we love the quality of the graphics and the quality of the book itself.  It’s a great story and our son loves it so much, he’s asking when we can go on another cruise.

You can purchase Peter The Cruise Ship or other books by this author online at Amazon.  Retail price is $16.95.
